Accessibility in Retail — Compliance, Community, and Competitive Advantage

The Equality Act 2010 requires all businesses providing goods and services to make “reasonable adjustments” for disabled customers. This applies to your physical premises, your in-store experience, and increasingly, your digital services — website, online shop, and customer-facing technology.

Over 14 million people in the UK are disabled — more than 20% of the population. Research consistently shows that disabled customers are more brand-loyal and tend to spend more with businesses that make them feel welcome. Accessibility isn’t just about avoiding discrimination claims. It’s about serving your whole community and tapping into a market that many of your competitors are ignoring.

If you sell into EU markets as well, the European Accessibility Act came into effect in June 2025 with specific requirements for digital products and services. While the UK hasn’t adopted equivalent legislation post-Brexit, any UK business selling to EU consumers needs to comply.

At ITS4, accessibility is part of our DNA. Our parent company Accelerando developed ITS4Access — assistive POS technology that enables businesses to employ sight-challenged individuals. We’ve been doing this work in the US for years, and we’re bringing it to the UK market.

Whether it’s configuring accessible POS interfaces, auditing your digital services for WCAG compliance, or implementing assistive technology that opens up employment opportunities, we can help you turn a compliance obligation into a genuine competitive advantage and a measurable social impact.
